Church and Tree Carroll Gardens
I lived in Carroll Gardens for over 6 years and would pass this church so many times on my way to the F train. One day I looked up and instantly fell in love with how the tree reached out, creating this yin and yang with the pointed church steeple. To me it looks like the tree is reaching out, trying to touch the church looking for answers. Aren't we all?
I my self am not religious but I respect all religions and think this particular church had very strong lines so I wanted to bring that out by enhancing the contrast on post production. Notice how the lines on the church are very similar to the lines in the tree breaches. They are one of the same so the tree will find answers if it looks within itself. That enlightenment is something I strive to remember every day and that is why I take pictures of things people normally pass by. The answer is often right in front of us.
The balance of the church and tree create this very unique positive and negative space that I'm drawn to. The break in the clouds are perfectly placed, pushing the church into the arms of the tree. So who's in power? The church or the tree? Does the church depend on the tree or vice versa? These are the kinds of discussions good art should spark. There is a meaning that can be interpreted many different ways and I find that fascinating.
